The Freight Elevator Quartet

R. Luke DuBois, Paul Feuer, Rachael Finn, Stephen Kreiger, 1996-2003

From 1996 until 2003, I had a band called The Freight Elevator Quartet, which performed improvised electronic music. We released three studio recordings (including one in collaboration with DJ Spooky), two live albums, and two 12” dance singles (featuring remixes by A Guy Called Gerald, among others). Our original concept for the group was to create the musical version of Steampunk, a literary genre in which contemporary authors write science fiction from the vantage point of people in centuries past: “the present imagining the past imagining the future.” As a result, our entire musical output was about sowing temporal and genre-related confusion by blending instruments and styles that, according to mainstream musical taste, had no business being in the same room.
